Schweser notes or CFAI books? Posted by: girlie (IP Logged) Date: January 12, 2007 10:27AM
Hello everyone, I just registered for the June 1007 Level 1 and would like your opinion whether it is necessary to purchase CFAI books. I have bought them already-they are in the mail, but some people have been advising me to return them. What's your opinion? Are they worth their cost? Or should Schweser notes be enough? Thx!

I talked with a proffesor who teaches CFA test prep classes and he told me it was completely necessary to buy the CFAI books but other people i have spoken too told me just to get notes, so all i bought was the schweser notes. If you have the money get both.

I bought the books, but I plan on supplementing with schweser flashcards, practice exam book, and passpro subscription...

FWIW, I bought the notes for 2007 and am using them primarily, but also picked up the '06 CFAI off of e-bay as a back up to help me out on a few areas I'm rusty on. I think a lot depends on your background/education.

i would go with the orignal books. for me it covers all bases and leaves me less anxiety as i wait for the scores knowing that i did not try to half ass my way through something. i respect the cfai and what to see what they have to say about finance.

maybe is a conspiracy -- the CFAI looks at all the candidates and passes the people who bought the original books over people who bought the notes. they say, "that'll teach those mofos by dissing our books"

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which notes you buy as long as you understand all the LOS. If you can understand them using Schweser or Stella Or CFAI, it doesnt really matter. Everyone learns differently and for me I think CFAI are better as they explain everything pretty well, whereas Schweser is more of a summary than an explanation in some areas and if I could across a topic I know pretty well, then I don't read as much detail of the CFAI notes. I really enjoy reading the CFAI textbooks as they can be used for reference material later on in life.

I bought both. I am using the Textbooks as a reference to the Schweser study notes.

Are any of you guys reading the textbooks like Reilly Brown/ White Sondhi Freid/ etc? Because that is what I am doing actually.. reading Schweser and then directly referring to the prescribed books from the Bookstore in case I have a doubt. I don't have the CFAI Curriculum..but I remember reading somewhere in this Forum that the CFAI texts have been made using the same material from these "original" textbooks.
Any opinions?

Unless you have a lot of recent finance coursework, I would NOT recommend forgoing the original material. Even if you scam yourself past L1 using only Shweser, the next level will expect that you know L1, and that will set you back. You really have to know your stuff, and retain it through the next levels.... Just my 2 cents.

Depends on time availability. Reading the same book again or reading two books is based on what will help one remember all teh LOSs. Sometimes one may understand things in one book or find them confusing. Then it helsp to read another. Schewer gives you a cover to cover read while Riley and Brown and White are huge books which you have to read sections. I liked reading some of these two books as I did not have Schweser. I liked the notes (non-Schweser) and these helped me in the end.
BUt most of all set aside dedicated 45 days for test taking and relearning things you are weak in. Because after a test one has to go over questions.

I think doing lots of practice exams is the most important. Schweser is more than enough for Level I.

My biggest issue with Schweser is that giving a quick summation of some topics actually makes you spend more time than necessary trying to figure out the underlying story and can be inadequate. I found that on the L1 exam in Dec., there were far less computational problems than I anticipated and much more of the "two column" questions. (i.e. True/False, True/True, etc.) With the CFAI text, the greater detail can be easier, albeit longer, because it is more comprehensive and delivers the full story.

yes! study notes alone should be fine as long as you take MANY practice exams.

where can I get more questions from apart from the concept checkers at the end of each Schweser topic?
I also have Book 6 with all exams but its too early for that
is there a place I can get questions by topic?

台灣菲利浦有一位高材生,姓王。他三關都只用金證照的講義,s參考書連看都沒看,一樣過關。
他說金證照教的好
我說他的資質有夠棒 |

A set of Study Notes is necessary if you wanna save time to get key concepts quickly. |

2008起報考CFA強制買教科考,不用再花錢花時間在簡陋的study notes了

Beginning with the 2008 exams, CFA Institute will include the assigned CFA Program curriculum and one online sample exam in the registration fee paid. |

STALLA IS ALSO A GOOD CHOICE. IT'S MORE COMPREHENSIVE THAN SCHWESER BUT LESS WORDY THAN TEXTBOOKS. |
